The BMW 3 Series Sedan has epitomised the concept of sporty driving pleasure in the global premium midsize class for more than 40 years. Exuding dynamic design, agile handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative equipment features, it takes the signature characteristics of a BMW and turns the volume up several notches.
This week we’re in England putting our harnesses on in Mark Brown’s modified BMW M3. The E30 generation was the very first of the now-iconic M3s, and the only one that was built as a race car first and street car second. The homologation special supported the most successful touring car of all time for the German marque, and Mark didn’t escape the draw of the M3 when he watched them compete in the period. Following a debilitating accident, he’s now recovered and behind the wheel of his own E30 M3 that he’s modified into a tasteful, street-legal, track car that looks the absolute business with a set of driving lights on the hood. 2019 BMW 3 Series 7th Generation. Overview.
BMW rarely makes big design changes to its vehicles all at once. Some may complain about that, but in a way, it's a credit to the automaker. The design of the 3 Series, for instance, undergoes only gradual changes from generation to generation, and unlike other rivals, it hasn't needed to reinvent itself. Once again, the seventh-generation BMW 3 Series makes small changes to the existing look, though some of the updates are more significant than you might expect.
Up front, BMW reinterprets the double kidney grilles. The two grilles are now connected, and they each have much thicker frames. The new headlights continue the bolder look. BMW reshaped these lights, making them connect more snugly to the grille similar to the 5 Series and 7 Series. Straying slightly from the lamps' traditional shape, BMW cut a notch into each of the units. The lower vent is larger and is flanked by new lighting cutouts.
Despite being BMW's entry-level sedan, the 3 Series grows once again for the new generation. It's 2.9 inches longer, 0.6 inch wider, and 0.5 inch taller than its predecessor, with a wheelbase that's 1.6 inches longer. Other than the slightly larger proportions, the 3 Series hasn't changed much from the side profile. You can still see it has a long hood and short overhangs. Character lines running across the doors have changed, but only in a subtle way. There is a newly designed Hofmeister kink incorporated into the C-pillar.
While other markets will get a plethora of gasoline and diesel engines, the plan is to offer only three choices in the U.S. The four-cylinder 330i and the six-cylinder M340i will use evolutions of existing turbocharged powerplants. A plug-in-hybrid 330e will follow in early 2020, but BMW is being coy about the particulars of that one.
The 330i gets a modest increase in output, with horsepower rising from 248 to 255 and torque increasing from 258 to 295 lb-ft. BMW estimates acceleration figures will be just a tick quicker than the outgoing 330i's but don't be surprised if the improvement is bigger once we get the G20 on a test track. The M340i has the brawnier version of the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which will make its debut in the Z4; it produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Rear-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be optional on both the 330i and the M340i. In Europe, BMW will offer a six-speed manual transmission in certain diesel 3-series, but the only transmission offered in the U.S. will be an eight-speed auto. "Sadly, the take rate on manuals is declining and declining," product manager Stephan Horn says when we question this decision. "For this car, we calculate it will be less than 10 percent globally." But company executives have previously committed to offering a manual in the next M3, so start saving.
The new 330i will carry a base price of $41,195, which is close to the current version's entry point. The base price for six-cylinder cars won't move much, but it will creep past the $50,000 threshold. Sales of the 330i and M340i start early next year, with the plug-in-hybrid 330e following in 2020.
