10 Foods You Should and Shouldn't Wash Before Cooking

Since childhood, we’ve been taught to always wash everything we’re about to eat to make it safe for our health. However, very few people know that sometimes this habit does more harm than good. Washing certain foods can spread dangerous bacteria that make their way into your body and wreak havoc on your well-being. You don’t need to wash store-bought eggs since they’ve already been washed during commercial processing. Plus, manufacturers often put special substances on eggs to protect them from bacterial contamination. When you wash chicken or meat, the water helps the bacteria spread to your hands and the kitchen sink. Washing mushrooms isn’t a good idea because the more water mushrooms absorb, the weaker their flavor is. You should also never soak, remove the stalk, or peel them. You absolutely have to wash fruits and vegetables with both edible and inedible skin. Don't soak fruits and vegetables in water, either. This won't clean them but only spread the bacteria. Use running water, it's a safer bet. Just dry the food with a paper towel or a napkin after the “cold shower”. Food will definitely get contaminated if you don't wash the can really well before you open it. You should also always wash fresh nuts before eating them, even if they’re peeled. Music: Seven – Twenty TIMESTAMPS Never wash these foods: Eggs 0:29 Chicken 1:10 Meat 2:08 Pasta 3:11 Mushrooms 3:55 Always wash these foods: Fruits and vegetables with edible skin 4:30 Fruits and vegetables with inedible skin 5:12 Cans 5:58 Nuts 6:34 Dried fruit 7:21 SUMMARY -Don't wash store-bought eggs. You will remove the protective layer so if the shell gets cracked, chances are the egg will become infected. -When you wash chicken, the water helps the bacteria spread to your hands and the kitchen sink. -Just like chicken, you shouldn't wash raw meat, like beef, pork, veal, or lamb, because it’s also covered in bacteria that the water just spreads all around. -Washing pasta is pretty much criminal in the culinary world because the water removes the starch that helps the noodles absorb sauce more effectively. -Washing mushrooms isn’t a good idea because the more water mushrooms absorb, the weaker their flavor is. -Rinse fruits and vegetables with edible skin under regular cold running water to remove 99% of the dangerous bacteria. Dry the food with a paper towel or a napkin after the “cold shower”. -Even if you aren't planning on eating the rind of a lemon or orange, you still need to wash these fruits and also scrub the outside with a clean brush. -Wash your tin cans with soap before you ever open them to prevent their contents from getting contaminated. -Washing nuts helps get rid of the phytic acid they contain. Plus, you never know for sure where they’ve been stored, how they were transported, and how many people touched them at the grocery store. -Even if you bought dried fruit in a nice pretty package, you have to wash it first or soak it for a few hours.
