Hundreds of nursery schools in England could close if the government presses ahead with plans to offer 30 hours a week of free childcare, a union warns.
Pre-schools will not cope financially after a planned two-year package of taxpayer support ends, says the National Association of Head Teachers.
In 2017, free care for three-and four-year-olds is set to rise from 15 to 30 hours a week in term-time.
Ministers say the extra funding will provide stability for nursery schools.
There are 400 maintained nursery schools in England, offering an early years education to three- and four-year-olds.
Two-thirds are in the most deprived areas of England, and 99% are rated as good or outstanding.
The NAHT carried out analysis with the charity Early Education.
They found those in the local authority areas with the highest number of nurseries - including Birmingham, Lancashire and Hertfordshire - would see huge cuts in funding if the proposal to double the current 15 hours of free time was introduced.
Every nursery in England should have a qualified early years teacher to help toddlers develop skills like speech and language, a children's charity says.
Save the Children says pre-schoolers can be "set back decades" if their brains are not adequately stimulated before they start formal schooling.
It says early years teachers can assist children and parents with learning.
Ministers say they are making major investments in the sector, working with the profession to improve its status.
To become an early years teacher, candidates need a degree and at least a GCSE C grade in English, maths and science. They have to pass professional tests in numeracy and literacy and complete a period of initial teacher training.
'Brain time'
The Save the Children report, Lighting Up Young Brains, is written in conjunction with the Institute of Child Health at University College London and highlights pre-school years as a "critical opportunity" for the brain to develop key skills.
The report suggests the government should make playtime "brain time" under the guidance of a qualified early years teacher.
The charity says failure to properly stimulate toddlers' brains during nursery years could set them back for decades.
Save the Children claims government figures show almost 130,000 children in England last year were falling behind with language abilities before they even reached school.
This means six children in every reception class struggled with their early language skills, it says.
It warns that failure to develop good language skills can leave children struggling to learn in the classroom and unable to catch up with their peers.
Bangladesh: Nursery business booming due to big demand from middle-class and businesses

Nursery and flower business has rapidly expanded in the capital as elsewhere in the country over the last two decades, with most demand coming from the middle-class people and businesses, experts said.

The number of plant farms supplying both horticultural and floricultural plants was minimal in the 1990s, which has increased to 10,200 today, while annual sales jumped from Tk 250 million to Tk 20 billion today, industry data shows.

Horticulture comprises fruits, wood, vegetables and medicinal plants while floriculture covers flowers and ornamental plants.

According to the Bangladesh Plant Nursery Man Society (BPNMS), a platform of the country's nurseries, nearly 0.2 million people are directly involved in nurseries and 0.15 million farmers are now engaged in commercial horticulture and floriculture business.
